What this site does and does not collect.
The NZ Bear Hunt is an archive. There is nothing to sign up for, nothing to log in to, and no form anywhere on this site, so there is nothing for us to collect from you directly. No email address, no name, no account.
What is measured
We use Google Analytics to see whether anyone still visits. It records the pages viewed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, how far down a page people read, which press links and photos get opened, and whether the gallery is used. It does not tell us who you are. Google sets a cookie to tell one visit from another. If you block it, the site works exactly the same.
Things on the page that come from somewhere else
Three parts of this site are served by other people, and their own privacy terms apply to them.
- The Shielded quick exit badge in the footer, run by Women's Refuge. Its code loads on every page.
- The Anthony's Windows episodes on the Story page. They are YouTube videos, loaded from the no cookie version of YouTube, which means Google sets no tracking cookie unless you press play. The player itself still loads when you scroll to it, so Google sees the request.
- The site is hosted by Vercel, which keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, as part of delivering the pages.
The photographs
The window photos were shared with the NZ Bear Hunt by people all over the country in 2020. Where a face appears, it is covered. If a photo is yours and you would like it taken down, say so and it will be removed, no reason needed.
